Fiji

About Fiji:

Fiji consists of 18,376 square kilometres of land and includes approximately 330 islands of which around 100 are inhabited. The largest island and population centre is Viti Levy, followed by Vanua Levu. The four largest islands, Viti Levu, Vanua Levu, Taveuni and Kadavu are surrounded by coral reefs and have mountains located in the central region of each island which cover a large portion of the land mass.
Latoka is the second largets city of Fiji. It is in the west of the island of Viti Levu, 24 kilometres north of Nadi, and is the second port of entry in Fiji, after Suva. Lying in the heart of Fiji’s sugar cane growing region, it is known as the Sugar City.
Fiji’s economy is based on mainly agriculture and tourism. Two of the country’s main exports are sugar and copra (dried coconut). Coconut oil is extracted from the copra and used to make many different things including soap, shampoo and margarine. A variety of crops are also produced including coconut oil, cocoa, ginger and kava.

How are we linking with Fiji?

The TurningPoint Lyndhurst District Church is currently supporting a CRC Church in Lautoka, Fiji. The current pastor is Ps Rusiate Bulamailagi who is fijian, with his wife Rebecca, a Papua New Guinean and their 8 year old daughter Elina. They are reaching out mostly to Hindu Indians, The church has about 35-40 people attending with 25-30 children turning up to a Saturday children’s program called ‘Joy Time’. The children are from different backgrounds with only some being Christians. The church runs two midweek bible studies and a youth group on Friday night.
The Lautoka church is a CRC church and the CRC believe that this church will be a strategic ministry base in the future for the work being done there in Fiji.
This is a very excitiing project and we feel very blessed to be able to offer overseas support to another church for the extension of God’s Kingdom. The CRC Lautoka church has purchased land on a lease arrangement but are yet to put a building on it.
